Urahara Kisuke grew up with his good friend Tessai in Soul Society. When he got into the Gotei 13, he became the 3rd seat to Shihouin Yoruichi in the Special Ops Division. He was incredibly effecient, capable, intellegent, and strong-- it only made sense when Yoruichi recommended him to become the new 12th Division Captain.
Upon his new duties as Captain, Kisuke started up the Research and Development branch, and began running experiments that may have been considered controversial... even releasing someone from the Maggots' Nest (Soul Society insane asylum) to work as the assistant to the new branch. One of the most controversial creations he had ever made was called the Hōgyoku (a stone that dissolved the line between Shinigami and Hollow).
Unfortunately, he was forced to use the Hōgyoku to save the lives of 7 Shinigami that had been wrongfully put through hollowfication. To make matters worse, he was accused of causing harm to the Shinigami in the first place by the order of the Gotei 13. He and Tessai were sentanced to the worst possible punishment for their crimes, but Yoruichi had assisted their escape.
One of his questionable experiments-- a special gigai (faux body) that eventually allowed a spirit to become a living body again-- saved his life as well as the lives of 7 Shinigami that had become abominations. He decides that the hogyouku mustn't stray to the wrong hands, thusly hid the stone inside Kuchiki Rukia's special unorthodox faux body... with the plan that when she turns human, the stone will forever be sealed away.
Thusly, when Rukia gets taken by Soul Society, with the plan of execution... he took it upon himself to assist Kurosaki Ichigo into becoming a Shinigami and helped his friends in their mission to save Rukia. After it all, he was extremely sorry for what he had done and what he had put everyone through... though he still lives in the living world, running his shop of spirit-goods.
